The small town of Dalyan on the south- western coast of the Mediterranean is set in the centre of a broad delta river whose natural beauty remains unspoilt.
Dalyan is set in a conservation area and has much to offer the visitor by way of natural beauty and historical interest. The ancient city of Kaunos lies here with ruins dating back to the 3rd Century. The Dalyan River flows past the village between the Mediterranean and Köycegiz Lake. It winds its way down past ancient Lycian Rock Tombs to the sea, via a small network of lakes and waterways. The river delta and lake are home to a vast number of fish and other water life, as well as many bird species such as the Sparrow hawk, Crane, Kingfisher and Jay. The Stork is also native to this area migrating here at the end of March to nest until the end of August.
At the beach end of the Dalyan river is the Iztuzu sandbar which forms 5km of beautiful sandy beach, with clear and safe water for swimming.
Reached by regular Dolmus bus or daily boat service from Dalyan, this is where the endangered Loggerhead Turtle return to lay their eggs. The nesting time is from May till October. Due to strict conservation laws, visiting times are restricted between May and September when the Turtles are nesting. The beach is open from 8am-6pm so as not to interfere with the nesting habits of these rare Turtles.
The original village is submerged under the lake due to an earthquake 350 years ago. The current town of Köycegiz is now a small sleepy village except on Monday when there is a market. This can be reached by boat or road from Dalyan.
Along the channel of the delta from Lake Köycegiz are the Sultaniye Thermal baths where the water is 40 degrees C. The water has been used since Hellenistic times, and is thought to have many healing properties.
The ancient city of Caunos stands opposite the town of Dalyan. There is an Acropolis surrounded by the city walls that are from the Byzantine era, and has a long and varied history - well worth a visit.
Examples of trips include: trips to Ekincik Bay with delicious BBQ at the beach, trips to Bacardi Beach and the open sea early in the morning with a traditional Turkish breakfast on the board, and trips to the Mud Baths and Thermal Springs on the way to the Köycegiz market. Boats may be hired for private tours in and around Dalyan.
